The Tipping Point for Self-Checkout: It’s Tipped

If your independent customers had any question that self-checkout’s time has come, show them this new article from Retail Systems Research.  Nikki Baird, RSR’s managing partner, wasn’t a believer until listening to independents Jarrod Welch (Reasor’s) and John Sweigart (Redner’s) at our recent User Conference.  “Eye-opening,” she says: “Independent grocers face the stiffest competition, the least amount of capital available for investment in technology solutions, and the least amount of risk tolerance for experimenting and testing new concepts. When these retailers speak of SCO not in terms of ROI, but in terms of staying competitive, it’s clear SCO has passed the tipping point.”  On the U-Scan All-In-One Page.

FACT-Compliant Receipts

Besides complying with PCI requirements for handling card data, retailers must also comply with the U.S. the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 (the “FACT Act”). This law prohibits a card-holder’s expiration date or full card number from being printed on the receipt.  There have been recent high-profile lawsuits where major retailers were sued by shoppers for printing their card data on receipts in violation of the FACT Act.

While many merchants prefer the masked date to appear on the receipt for lookup and verification purposes, StoreNext believes that the recent lawsuits will likely change opinion to take the most conservative approach possible, and therefore future releases of ISS45 will be provided with the new default templates that omit even the masked date.

The current default ISS45 templates mask the card’s expiration date by printing 00/YY where “YY” is the last two characters of the year.  While it is hard to imagine this being correctly interpreted as a true “date” (after all, there is no month called “00”) some grocers may be subject to frivolous copycat lawsuits from impatient shoppers who still have not yet won the lottery jackpot.  This Technical Bulletin provides the templates and processes to remove the masked receipt date with ISS45 V7 and V8.

“Connected Payments” Program To Cut Electronic Payments Costs

StoreNext and MTXEPS have partnered to bring a welcome ray of light to independent grocers’ struggle to survive ever-increasing electronic payment costs. Announced today at the FMI Show + MARKETECHNICS in Chicago, “Connected Payments” provides an array of features designed to cut merchants’ payments expenses by up to 25 percent – or more. Connected Payments also eliminates most up-front costs - including payments software licenses - with StoreNext’s ISS45 and ScanMaster point-of-sale systems.
“Connected Payments is a breakthrough program aimed squarely at the number one problem facing our customers,” said Ray Carlin, StoreNext president and CEO. “Electronic payments interchange and processing fees often exceed independent and regional chain profit margins, and since these grocers are our single focus, their challenges are our challenges. StoreNext is stepping up with a revolutionary combination of new partnerships and a payments architecture that strips out layers of expense and drives electronic payment costs to the minimum.”

U-Scan Hardware and Software Bulletins

A few for you this week - one from Speros Voss that helps you remedy cases where the logo refuses to print on an ISS45 receipt, and then a matched pair of bill dispenser items, one in reference to a magnetic catch that may not be properly secured, another about "bill errors" with the F53 bill dispenser.

Look Out - New Rules for Supermarkets and FSA Debit Cards

Many of your stores will require federally-mandated upgrades to their POS and payment systems by the end of this year to properly handle the new debit cards used to handle payments from flexible spending arrangements (FSA).  If the store has a pharmacy or sells reimbursable health-care products or services, there will be enhancements and work to do.  So keep your customers out of jail - please check this out (mostly Q&A).

Great Customer Discussion

A quote from this conversation published by RetailWire:  "The old argument for avoiding the application service provider (ASP) model has been that business managers are afraid to give up control of their data to an outside data bank. This argument simply no longer makes sense. ... One of the challenges for the supermarket CIOs was finding good developers.  How would I feel graduating with a computer science degree today. These graduates are faced with a very challenging decision -- whether they want to go to work with a network based solution provider like Google, with their email, spreadsheet, and word processing applications all available through a browser, or go to work for the IT department of a retail business. Let me see -- Google, with stock options potentially worth millions, dog care in the office, free gourmet cafeteria, etc. -- or Retailer X, where the net profit margin is two percent and IT is regarded as an expense department within a company whose business culture is entirely different."  You'll enjoy reading this.

New ISS45 Parameters/Reports Crib Sheets V7 and V8

Do you know what these are?  A "crib sheet" is a quick-reference that tells you where to find every report and every parameter is located in V7 or V8.  Just ask for it in the lookup, and you have your answer instantly.  And this new version (V7 only for now) has a new feature so you can use the Crib Sheet as a Store Setup guide: all the system-level parameters are prepared with drop-down boxes that show the options available.  You can sit with the grocer and step through the selections to determine and record exactly how you will set up the store.  Then -- keep the sheet as a backup of how you've got the store configured to help you support the store later.  Now current for the new 7.1.1.1 and 8.1.2.0 releases.  Take a look - with the huge number of parameters and options, this really helps you keep the waterfowl aligned.
